Phone. Purse. Mask? Are masks going to be the new norm?

Phone. Purse. Mask? Are masks going to be the new norm?

I think most of us continue to hope that by 2022 masks will be a thing of the past but looking to Asia and how behaviours changed following the SARS outbreak of 2002/3 maybe that's optimistic. The SARS of 2002 had a frightening mortality rate of 11% although relative to SARS-CoV-2 a lot less cases - just 8422! Notably this was still enough to change the collective psyche of many across South-East Asia who have worn masks ever since.

According to Dr Ryan, Executive Director at the World Health Organisation this Covid pandemic although very severe is ‘not necessarily the big one’ and should be a ‘wake-up call’ for the future where viruses may be both more transmissible and more lethal.

In the meantime the optimists among us will point to innovation in vaccines, airflow and even the pith of bitter oranges repurposed to sanitise air and surfaces as hope that one day masks will indeed be redundant once more but for now I’m going to keep wearing mine.
